Technical Assistant (m/f/d) Krill stock assessment in the Southern Ocean (KrillBIS)

Background

KrillBIS is a BMEL-funded project led by Prof. Dr. Bettina Meyer. The aim of KrillBIS is to investigate how a species-specific stock assessment approach in relation to krill’s plasticity to predicted climate change scenarios can improve our understanding of krill population dynamics in the future and to provide a new management approach for the krill fishery in the Southern Ocean.

Tasks

  • Net sampling of krill and analyses of krill samples according to CCAMLR protocols.
  • Maintain and operate an up-to-date krill database
  • Providing support for publications and presentations with figures and visualization of data.
  • Collecting and analyzing biogeochemical samples, including Chla and POC
  • Collecting and analyzing krill samples for body lipid content, C and N content, enzyme activity, qPCR, and respiration measurements.
  • Performing experiments with krill in the laboratory and at sea.
  • Website design and maintenance
  • Supervising students in the laboratory

Requirements

  • Technical degree in biological technical assistant or biological laboratory technician, or equal qualification such as Bachelor of Science in Global Environmental Sciences, Biology or Ecology, Aquatic Sciences or Marine biology, or Biological Oceanography
  • Expertise in sampling and analyzing krill according to CCAMLR protocols
  • Expertise in the required analytical techniques.
  • Experience in ship expeditions in the Southern Ocean.
  • Expertise in performing experiments with marine organisms

Desirable skills and knowledge

  • Strong team player skills
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral
