Awi - via Umantis - Rönne - 22-01-2020 zur Vakanz

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

PostDoc "Physical Oceanography of the southern Weddell Sea" (m/f/d)

Background

Warm waters of open ocean origin lead to enhanced melt rates and potential instability of Antarctic ice shelf grounding lines, relevant for global sea level rise. The Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf is presently stable due to a wide, cold continental shelf, but models project an increased vulnerability in the future.

The project aims at understanding drivers and variability of processes that control the flow of warm water onto the southern Weddell Sea continental shelf and toward the fringing ice shelves. The tasks are focused around the COSMUS expedition, which will retrieve mooring time series from the Filchner Trough and carry out detailed hydrographic measurements at the continental slope. The data will be analyzed along with historical observations to shed light on open ocean-continental shelf exchange.

The position is part of our recruiting initiative AWI INSPIRES - INternational Science Program for Integrative Research in Earth Systems. AWI INSPIRES aims at strengthening our new research program “Changing Earth, Sustaining our Future”. Details about all open positions and the general application requirements can be found at
