Background

, invites applications to 6 postdoctoral researcher positions in its 5th flexpool call from fall 2020 onwards (see overview in published flexpool general announcement).

The iKNOW project is highly interdisciplinary and aims to bring together and advance both computer science and biodiversity research. Knowledge Graphs (KGs) are widely regarded as one of the most promising ways to manage and link information in the age of Big Data and have the potential to change the way science is conducted. This is true for biodiversity science, too. Creating KGs is time-consuming and nontrivial, though. With this project, we aim to develop a toolbox to support the low-effort creation of reproducible KGs with detailed provenance information.

We aim to leverage the wealth of unique data sources at iDiv to showcase the applicability of this approach and to create a valuable new resource for biodiversity research. Thus, the project will contribute to progress in both computer science and biodiversity research. Work in the project will be done in close collaboration with the planned PlantHub, a strategic project at iDiv aiming to integrate the numerous comprehensive plant related resources at iDiv.

Job description:

  • Build a toolbox for (semi-)automatically transforming data sources into KGs and describe the tools semantically. This task will be based on existing tools at iDiv and elsewhere.
  • Extend approaches to provenance tracking to match the needs of the project and integrate these into the tools.
  • Develop first concepts for automatic selection and combination of tools for transforming a given data source into a KG.
  • Apply results from above to exemplary iDiv data sources and improve the approaches based on evaluation results.
  • Writing and publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Work closely with the PlantHub postdoc as well as computer scientists and biodiversity researchers.

Requirements:

  • PhD or equivalent degree in a project-related field (e.g. computer science, biodiversity informatics, ecology, environmental sciences)
  • Expertise and experience in Semantic Web Technologies, in particular Knowledge Graphs
  • Expertise on provenance management and/or workflows is a plus
  • Experience in software development
  • Interest and ability in interdisciplinary work bridging Computer Science and applications in ecology or environmental sciences
  • Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written)
  • Team-oriented and strong organizational skills
