Friedrich Schiller University Jena seeks to fill the following position at the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) in Leipzig at the earliest possible date.:

Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d)

on the flexpool project 2 "Detecting long-term functional changes in biodiversity: boosting analyses of herbarium specimens using spectroscopic methods (FunSpec)"

initially limited until 30 September 2021,
extension for 2-3 further years possible and dependent upon successful renewal of DFG funding for iDiv (evaluation in spring 2021)
65 percent of a full-time position
Salary: up to Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L, if the personal requirements and tasks are fulfilled

The project is mainly supervised by Karsten Wesche (Senckenberg Görlitz), Christine Römermann (FSU Jena) and Helge Bruelheide (MLU Halle), and aims at documenting biodiversity change based on our extensive herbaria. Specifically, we aim at measuring plant nutrient contents by calibrating non-invasive spectral methods, with the aim to analyze responses to increasing levels of nutrient input over the last 100 - 150 years. The project is supervised by Prof. Karsten Wesche. Place of work is Senckenberg Deutsches Entomologisches Institut, Müncheberg, Frankfurt (Oder)

Job description:

  • Retrieving suitable samples from both extensive herbaria and field sites
  • Analyzing samples by both traditional chemical methods and spectroscopy
  • Assessing changes using state-of-the art statistical approaches
  • Writing and publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals
  • Presenting results at national and international conferences

Requirements:

  • M.Sc. or equivalent degree in a project-related field (e.g. ecology, environmental sciences)
  • Expertise and experience in plant ecology, and on flora of Central Europe
  • Interest and ability in lab approaches, including inorganic analytics
  • Interest and ability in collection-based research and herbarium studies
  • Strong statistical skills (in R)
  • Excellent English communication skills (spoken and written)
  • Team-oriented and strong organizational skills
