PhD candidate (f/m/d) for Radiation Oncology

Topic: Boosting the Development of Anti-Tumor Immune Responses

The mission:

Immune checkpoint blockade (Nobel Prize 2018) revolutionized cancer therapy. Nevertheless, many patients do not benefit. Therefore, we investigate immune checkpoint blockade in combination with other types of therapy, such as radiation therapy. You will study fundamental mechanisms to boost the development of a strong antitumor-immune response after the combination of radiation therapy and immune checkpoint blockade (Keyword: “abscopal effect”). Your research will be based on previous publications (e.g. Fischer et al. Science Translational Medicine 2017; Heidegger et al Science Immunology 2019) and exciting (unpublished) preliminary data from our young research group AG Radioimmunonkologie | RadioOnkologie und Strahlentherapie (tum.de). We are funded by various institutions such as the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation, the German Cancer Aid and the Volkswagen Foundation. We are part of the CRC1371 of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Your responsibilities:

  • Conducting a scientific work program with a focus on tumor immunology, which includes in vitro and in vivo experiments
  • Scientific discussion of your data and the data of your colleagues in weekly seminars

Your profile:

  • Very strong motivation, scientific curiosity and commitment to goal-oriented scientific research
  • A degree in biology, biochemistry or a related field with an excellent academic study record
  • Team player skills and enthusiasm to work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment
  • Experience in experimental research and biological and molecular methods (Cell culture, qPCR, FACS…)
  • Previous experience in animal research will be of advantage (but not mandatory)

We offer you:

  • This is your opportunity to be part of our young research group where immunological principles meet today’s challenges in clinical oncology. Our labs are located in a stimulating environment at Klinikum rechts der Isar
  • Your PhD project is based on unpublished data that have already provided a proof of principle of the hypothesis of the research project, which enables you to get started with a clear underlying experimental outline
  • You will have the chance to discuss all ongoing projects of your co-workers as well as your own in weekly meetings/discussions to improve your scientific background knowledge and experimental expertise
  • You will be part of our young team of highly motivated, hard-working students who will not only help you find everything in the lab but also the best places outside of the lab in Munich
  • Situated next to the Alps, Munich is consistently ranked as one of the most enjoyable cities in the world
  • An opportunity to work in the city centre of Munich on Max-Weber-Platz with good access to public transport systems and benefits in the form of specially discounted public transport tickets for trains/buses/underground trains/trams operated by MVV, MVG, Deutsche Bahn, Meridian and BOB
  • Employee saving schemes and company pension system
  • Performance-related salary in accordance with the TV-L public-sector salary scale plus attractive benefits offered to public- sector employees
  • Flexitime and 38,5 weekly working hours
  • First contract will cover 24 months. Contract extensions depend on the progress of the doctoral project.
In general, a full-time position can also be filled on a part-time basis. If the candidates’ suitability for the position in question is equal, severely disabled applicants shall be given preference. Interview-related costs can, unfortunately, not be reimbursed.

The position is available. Depending on your wishes, we can discuss the date of your start in our group (e.g. summer or autumn 2022).

We look forward to receiving your application!
