The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) is seeking for the partner site Essen / Düsseldorf of the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK) a

Junior Research Group Leader "Targeting subclonal genetic heterogeneity in cancer at the single-cell level"

(Ref-No. 2022-0401)

Together with university partners at seven renowned partner sites, the DKFZ has established the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK). The DKTK is a joint initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the participating states and the DKFZ. The alliance between the DKFZ as the core center and the university partner sites in Berlin, Dresden, Essen / Düsseldorf, Frankfurt / Mainz, Freiburg, Heidelberg, München and Tübingen establishes joint translational cancer research units.

The DKTK promotes interdisciplinary research approaches and innovative clinical studies, which will contribute to improved prevention, diagnosis and faster implementation of personalized therapies for cancer patients. Further information can be found at

Job description:

We seek to appoint a junior research group leader with a strong background in computational biology and bioinformatics. The research scope should focus on resolution of subclonal heterogeneity of cancer at the single-cell level, including progression of therapy-resistant tumors driven by clonal evolution, and/or on the interaction of cancer cells with the tumor microenvironment at the single-cell level. Expertise in the integration of multi-omics datasets, in particular bulk and single-cell RNA/DNA sequencing datasets, with computational and statistical models is expected. Experience in genetic variant analyses as well as development and application of bioinformatics tools for reliable and accurate variant calling (SNVs, Indels, CNVs, SVs) is requested. Experience in leveraging AI approaches and Big Data evaluation to predict outgrowth, drug sensitivity or resistance of cancers based on genetic characteristics of single tumor cells is welcome.

The research field should match with the profile of the DKTK partner site Essen / Düsseldorf, with a particular focus on translational research in pediatric leukemias and solid cancers as well as brain tumors in Düsseldorf. We are open to applicants coming from other fields of bioinformatics research, with the precondition to align their strategy complementary to the established research groups. Competitive applicants should have an exceptional track record of accomplishment, with evident future potential and commitment to translational cancer research. The group is thought to be situated in a preclinical-translational area and expected to co-operate with clinician scientists.

The DKFZ in Heidelberg and the DKTK partner site Essen / Düsseldorf provide access to state-of-the-art core facilities. Translational research activities are supported by access to well characterized patient cohorts, high quality tumor tissue banks and excellent clinical research facilities.

The DKTK junior research group leader will be employed at the DKFZ Heidelberg and located with his/her research group at the Medical Faculty of the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. Support from DKTK covers the position of the group leader plus additional funds for personnel and consumables.

Requirements:

Candidates must hold a M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, natural science or related fields, preferentially (but not required) with postdoctoral experience and have a publication record that is internationally competitive for their stage of the career. The successful candidate is expected to acquire competitive national and international third-party research funding.

Provided that all requirements according to the Science Time Law (WissZeitVG) are met, the position will initially be limited to 3 years with the option of prolongation for 2 more years pending positive interim evaluation. Applications of medical scientists as well as clinician scientists are welcome. Applications should include CV, list of publications, two letters of recommendation, and a research synopsis that both summarizes current/past research accomplishments and outlines the candidate´s future research plans.

We offer:

  • Interesting, versatile workplace
  • International, attractive working environment
  • Campus with modern state-of-the-art infrastructure
  • Salary according to TV-L including social benefits
  • Possibility to work part-time
  • Flexible working hours
  • Comprehensive further training program
The position is limited to 3 years with the possibility of prolongation.
The position can in principle be part-time.
