Thesis Unravelling the history of Siberian larches using population genetics wit

The master project is integrated in the ERC project Glacial
Legacy
, which aims to answer the timely question: Why is northern Siberia covered with pure Larix (larch) forests? Although the climatic conditions in Siberia are similar to those in Northern Europe and North America, the latter regions are dominated by evergreen needle-leaf forest in comparison to the deciduous larch (Larix MILL.) forests in Siberia. This is peculiar as Larix is a poor competitor with evergreen needle trees in mixed stands. The basic mechanisms controlling the distributions of these two biomes are not well understood and future alterations due to climatic changes are uncertain.

Tasks

  • In this master thesis, you will extract DNA from larch species from different origins and prepare them for sequencing.
  • You will analyse DNA sequence data and apply modern population genetics methods in cooperation with The Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) in Gatersleben. The results will help to unravel the population history of larch species in Siberia.

Requirements

  • We are looking for a Master student in biology, molecular biology, forestry genetics or a similar field.
