Methane Monitoring Scientist, joint EDF+Business & Office of the Chief Scientist

 

Location:
Our preference is for this position to be performed near an EDF office or project location within the EST or CST areas of the US (NYC, Boston, Washington DC, Raleigh, Austin) or in the EU (Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin, however you will need to have the right to live and work in these EU locations when applying), as this role will support stakeholders across these regions. A hybrid office/work-from-home arrangement is ideal, but we are very flexible in determining how often in-person work will be required.

Overall Function
 

The Methane Monitoring Scientist will play a critical role in:
(1) Analysing the rapidly evolving emissions technology landscape and sector trends
(2) Supporting the adoption of technology to achieve a gold standard of emissions measurement, reporting and verification
(3) Conducting research and analysis into the use of climate satellite data among industry and regulators
 
The output will contribute to thought leadership that expands EDF’s presence, voice, and expertise in such topics.
 
Specifically, they will work with staff across EDF to accelerate emissions monitoring technology testing, evaluation, and deployment in the United States, and internationally, with an emphasis on mobile, remote, and continuous monitoring solutions. This work will support industry engagement with regards to policy advocacy in U.S. and EU and elevate EDF’s expertise and role in oil and gas emissions innovation through thought leadership. This role will guide, manage, and grow our work catalising technology-driven solutions to reduce and prevent emissions from the oil and gas value chain, as well as execute a strategy, in coordination with the Energy Program, to leverage data procured from MethaneSAT to secure meaningful emissions reductions from those with the power to act.

 
Key Responsibilities
The Methane Monitoring Scientist will work under a Senior Scientist, Office of the Chief Scientist, and in close collaboration with the Director, Energy Transition, EDF+Business. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Analyse methane emission detection and quantification technology industry landscape, technology adoption amongst industry, and sector trends. Output to inform engagements with industry and regulators.

Collaborate with industry, consultants, and other external stakeholders to generate cutting edge technical guidance on the use of novel technologies and methods for detecting and quantifying GHG emissions.

Analyse use of satellite remote sensing data among industry and regulators. With Office of Chief Scientist identify risks and opportunities for industry use of satellite-derived data that compliment MethaneSAT.

Build and manage relationships with entrepreneurs and technology providers.
Collaborate internally with MethaneSAT team to ensure that product design is optimised for industry and regulator engagement.
Conduct original research and publish thought leadership that expands EDF’s presence, voice, and expertise in topics such as industry trends, use of satellite data to mitigate GHG emissions, and oil and gas innovation.

Additional Responsibilities
Support other initiatives in the EDF+Business program as needed, including ongoing projects and “rapid response” to incoming inquires or new issues related to our oil and gas work.

Build relationships and catalyse strategic partnerships with technologists, academics, and industry.
Communicate project results to EDF staff, corporate partners, donors, the media and various stakeholders through reports, presentations, blogs, and other methods that build EDF thought leadership.

Qualifications
PhD in environmental or natural resources, chemistry, atmospheric science, chemical engineering, or related area with an applicable level of relevant of experience post-doc preferred, OR comparable combination of Master’s degree & relevant progressively responsible experience in a technical role, scientific, and/or industry

Experience with local atmospheric monitoring and/or remote sensing technologies and methodologies, with a focus on methane emissions and / or data integration, is desirable

Experience in project management and exceptional personal organisation and attention to detail

Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to structure and test hypotheses to innovate new solutions for persistent, challenging issues
Strong analytical skills and experience in performing rigorous analysis in support of highly visible work
An ability to work both independently and as a member of small teams on multiple projects in a fast-paced, dynamic, and creative environment
Proficiency in the use of PCs and the Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
 
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Experience with international scientific campaigns
General knowledge of the global oil and gas industry - priority geographies, critical stakeholders, operational practices and key news and trends
Multilingual abilities in any language besides English would be a bonus
Financial analysis experience
 

Hiring Range

We offer a strong total rewards package encompassing competitive salary, robust benefits, and professional development opportunities consistent with a modern global organization.

The pay range for this role is
85,000 - 95,000 USD
which takes into account factors such as candidate experience, skills, training, internal team equity and local norms.
