These positions will perform a variety of maintenance duties pertaining to the overall operation of grounds and facilities located in the Parks, Cemetery as well other City owned facilities.

The purpose is to support the department's operational responsibilities in key areas such as facility, grounds and sports field maintenance. Its mission is to provide safe, professionally maintained and aesthetically attractive parks and green spaces that provide opportunities for active and passive recreation while enhancing the quality of life and contributing to the value and attractiveness of O'Fallon as a place to live and visit.

The availability of positions varies throughout the year with the highest volume of hiring occurring in February and May but it is always a good time to apply for a position if you are interested. Park maintenance seasonal employment starts in February and normally concludes in November.

Range: $9.50 to $12.75 per hour

Essential Duties

Duties for these positions include (but are not limited to): maintenance & preparation of athletic fields, mowing, weeding, tilling, raking, other manual tasks, manual labor including lifting heavy materials & working in adverse weather conditions, janitorial functions in restrooms and park facilities to maintain a clean environment, including litter pick up and disposal, set up for special events and athletic games, including grooming the fields, operate equipment such as park vehicles, mowers, tractors, etc.; other duties as assigned for the benefit of the Parks & Recreation Department.

CREW MEMBER

(starts at $9.50):
We are seeking energetic and highly motivated individuals who enjoy working outdoors to fill Crew Member positions. No previous experience is required; just the ability to stay busy and productive, follow instructions, and learn. These positions are a great opportunity to acquire job skills and experience in a setting that is unique from employment in retail or food service.

The Crew Member position is responsible for the performance of grounds and facility maintenance tasks in parks & the cemetery. These tasks will generally fall within the operational areas of horticulture, turf, sports fields, facility and grounds (custodial) and special events.

ASSISTANT CREW LEADER

(starts at $10.25): Assistant crew leaders are a production and performance multiplier and are held to the highest levels of performance and productivity. We are seeking highly motivated team oriented individuals with the confidence to effectively lead others while displaying the highest level of initiative, productivity and performance. Assistant Crew Leaders receive extra pay and the positions provide a great opportunity to gain leadership experience in a structured and supportive environment.

The Assistant Crew Leader (ACL) position is responsible for operating in support of a Crew Leader or independently to provide field guidance and direction to 1-4 Crew Members (seasonal staff) in the performance of grounds and facility maintenance tasks in parks and the cemetery. These tasks will generally fall within the operational areas of horticulture, turf, sports field, facility and grounds (custodial) and special events. An ACL will be required to operate independently and is expected to exercise and demonstrate a high level of initiative, productivity and quality in the performance of their assignments.

Individuals with any previous grounds or park maintenance experience and/or leadership experience are encouraged to apply; but individuals of all experience levels with an aptitude for park maintenance work and the desire to lead others will be considered.

CREW LEADER

SPORTS PARK NIGHT CREW LEADER


(starts at $12.75):
Crew leaders are a production and performance multiplier and are held to the highest levels of performance and productivity. We are seeking highly motivated team oriented individuals with the confidence to effectively exercise and exert positive field leadership over seasonal staff performance. Crew leaders must be quality driven individuals, identify problems and exercise initiative to solve them, be detailed oriented, display an aptitude for park maintenance work and a willingness to learn and teach others. Crew leaders receive extra pay and the positions provide a great opportunity to gain leadership experience in a structured and supportive environment.

The Crew Leader (CL) position is responsible for providing field guidance and direction to Assistant Crew Leaders and Crew Members (seasonal staff) in the completion of grounds and facility maintenance tasks in parks and the cemetery. These tasks will generally fall within the operational areas of horticulture, turf, sports field, facility and grounds (custodial) and special events. A crew leader will typically be assigned a crew of 2-6 seasonal staff and will work in the field with them in the completion of directed tasks within these operational areas.

Night Crew Leader:

The Night Crew Leader (NCL) position is an operationally specific position that is responsible for coordinating, leading and performing park maintenance activities during the evening and night hours at the O'Fallon Family Sports Park in support of sports leagues, tournaments and other events. Position will require the ability to effectively interact with recreational staff, umpires (referees), coaches and visitors. NCL may work independently or be responsible for providing field guidance and direction to Assistant Crew Leaders and Crew Members in the performance of grounds, custodial and sports field operations during their assigned shifts.

Individual that have successfully completed at least one previous season of employment with the City of O'Fallon Parks and Recreation Department performing park maintenance or the completion of 4 prior months of current season employment with the City of O'Fallon Parks and Recreation Department performing park maintenance; or have completed a collegiate program in Recreation Park Tourism Administration (RPTA), grounds maintenance or related field or enrollment in a college level RPTA, grounds maintenance or related program of study with the successful completion of at least 20 semester hours; or 6 months of prior paid experience in municipal or commercial grounds maintenance are encouraged to apply. The Sports Park Night Crew Leader must have familiarity with ball field maintenance and the fundamentals of baseball and softball play. This may include previous ball maintenance experience and/or playing or coaching baseball or softball.

Requires

  • 17 years of age or older;
  • Must have an email address to receive work schedules;

  • Ability to efficiently and courteously interact with people;
  • Qualities such as competence, independence, self-sufficiency, dependability;
  • Ability to walk, run, stand, and sit and complete a variety of motor skills;
  • Ability to lift and carry 30-70 pounds regularly;
  • Ability to hear and see well;
  • Valid driver's license in good standing (clear driving record);
  • Ability to work staggered shift assignments as necessary including evenings and weekends;
  • Ability to work in hot, cold, wet and/or other unpleasant outdoor conditions;
  • Ability to use or learn to use a variety of tools and equipment;
  • Strong customer service skills;
  • Must be self-motivated and possess the ability to be productive with limited supervision;
  • Regular attendance.
