6 PhD students in AI and Data Science (f/m/d)

- full-time 100% (39,5 hrs/week) -

Artificial Intelligence is all about Data. Data are needed to train the artificial intelligence and thereby data availability and data quality become key factors in determining the success and quality of any AI application. Hochschule Aalen has more than 10 years of experience in applied science in AI for the benefit of society and industry, particularly SMEs and start-ups.

In our endeavour to further strengthen our capabilities in AI, particularly in technologies and methods of creating high-quality training data for AI, we have now won a major grant with an initial duration of 2 years, starting on August 1, 2023. This encompasses a complete project team of 6 PhD students, who will perform advanced research with our industrial and academic partners in the application of the latest AI technologies. The team will be supervised by experienced professors and build on a wide range of existing AI tools and methods developed at Hochschule Aalen.

Tasks of the project team

• Identification of relevant AI use cases of varying complexity and characteristics together with industrial partners and collection of the corresponding data.
• Development of methods for learning from non-annotated or partially annotated data.
• Development of methods for detecting and mitigating anomalies, like wrong or missing data.
• Development of methods for detecting and efficiently encoding categorical data.
• Development of methods for data labeling: Few-shot, weak supervision, and/or interactive labeling.
• Evaluation of the developed methods: Definition of methodical evaluation approaches. Evaluation of the performance through case studies. Evaluation of the transferability to new domains
• Integration of the developed AI tools into a consistent tool suite
• User-centric design of the tool suite.
• Project Management including coordination with project partners.
• Publication and presentation of the results in scientific journals and at conferences

Your profile:

• You are holding an M.Sc. in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related areas with good grades.
• Prior experience in data science is desirable.
• Already existing knowledge in the field of AI would be an advantage.
• You are curious and passionate about science.
• You are eager to advance your skills in Data Science and AI.
• You are a good team worker, communicative, friendly, and have a positive “can do” attitude.

The positions are limited to two years with an option for prolongation and is generally shareable.
The position will be classified in pay group 13 of the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (TV-L), provided that the legal and personal requirements are met.
