Thesis project Exposure assessment in neurotoxicity assays

Ufz - via Umantis - Leipzig - 04-06-2019 zur Vakanz

Despite the presence of neurotoxic chemicals in the environment and the steady increase of relevant diseases of the nervous system, hazard information of chemicals is highly limited in terms of neurotoxicity. Several neurotoxicity assays are available for testing of single chemicals. However, exposure assessment has not been conducted so far in these test systems. The aim of this study is a better understanding of partitioning and loss processes in neurotoxicity assays using an existing analytical method for concentrations measurements in

in vitro
bioassays and mass balance as well as kinetic models.

Your tasks:

  • To conduct cellular neurotoxicity assays for a set of model chemicals
  • To determine total and freely dissolved concentrations in the test medium over time
  • To optimize neurotoxicity test setup based on experimentally determined exposure concentrations
  • To compare measured concentrations with predictions from mass balance and kinetic models

Your profile:

  • Bachelor in chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science, or similar
  • Experience with HPLC-UV and LC-MS/MS would be preferred but not essential
  • Highly motivated, independent and reliably working
  • Good command of English

We offer:

  • Great insights into the work in a leading research institute
  • Individual supervision with the possibility to contribute your own ideas
  • an own topic to work on independently
  • work in international teams in a well-equipped laboratory
