Job Description What we offer The EU LimnoPlast project:
How do microplastics get into the freshwater ecosystems of Europe? Microplastics are now present everywhere, not just in our oceans but also in our rivers and lakes. Where exactly do they come from? And how can we prevent this in the future? With a view to answering these questions, the EU's LimnoPlast project brings together for the first time the three different fields of environmental, engineering, and social sciences. Microplastics are microscopically small plastic wastes that present a global challenge for marine and freshwater ecosystems. Samples of sediment from the shores of Lake Garda, for example, indicated the presence of 1, 000 microplastic particles per square meter, a level of contamination similar to that in the oceans. But the consequences for humans and animals have not yet been comprehensively researched, nor has the exact origin of the particles been adequately investigated. This project is supported by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program (a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network action, grant agreement no. 860720) and offers fully financed doctoral places (for promising young researchers, or ESRs) with attractive supplementary training activities and generous travel, laboratory, and research budgets. Successful candidates will be offered a place by a member of a European consortium of universities, research institutions, and companies in Germany, Denmark, France, Slovenia, Norway, Sweden, the UK, and the Netherlands. These form a transdisciplinary research and training network that aims to fast-track the scientific careers of the applicants
