Scientific activities / projects Development of operational processing chains for the generation of geoscientific products Computer Scientist, Scientist in geoinformatics or similar

Start your mission with DLR.

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is the national aeronautics and space research centre and the space agency of the Federal Republic of Germany. Here, 8000 employees work together on a unique variety of topics in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport, digitalisation and security. Their missions range from basic research to the development of innovative applications and products for tomorrow. Cutting-edge research requires excellent minds – particularly more females – at all levels, who fully achieve their potential in an inspiring environment. Launch your mission with us.

For our German Remote Sensing Data Center in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich we want to recruit a qualified

Development of operational processing chains for the generation of geoscientific products

Your mission:

The Department of Land Surface Dynamics of the German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) studies and quantifies global change as manifested on Earth‘s land surface, and in this connection addresses socially relevant issues.

The quantification of the change is based on the analysis of data from e.g. airborne and spaceborne imaging spectrometers. With the running and upcoming spaceborne imaging spectroscopy missions such as DESIS (on ISS) and EnMAP, operational processors are needed to derive relevant geospatial products on a regular basis for large areas. The processing of such (big) data requires high-performance techniques and algorithms as well as a basic understanding of all remote sensing processing steps from raw data to higher-level products. It includes the calibration and validation of data across all processing levels.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • development of operational processing chains for the generation of geoscientific products using multispectral and hyperspectral image data
  • prototype development based on scientific algorithms from different application areas (e.g. biodiversity, land degradation, geology etc.)
  • development and adaptation of orchestration systems to operate and monitor processes (e.g. Docker, Apache Mesos)
  • distribution of processors in cloud based production environments (e.g. via container technologies)
  • refactoring and optimization of software
  • development and adaptation of suitable calibration and validation strategies for geoscientific products
  • documentation in the field of software development, contribution to project reports and presentations
  • conception, operation, maintenance and further development of calibration and validation algorithms for spaceborne imaging spectrometers and integration of these algorithms into operational processors

Your qualifications:

  • University degree (Master) in computer science, geoinformatics or any comparable specialisation
  • profound knowledge and experience in programming (e.g. C / C++ / CUDA, IDL, Python, Matlab, R, etc.) and use of scientific libraries in image processing and statistics (e.g. OpenCV, GSL, Numpy, NLOpt, etc.)
  • sound knowledge in the development of processing chains under Linux
  • object-oriented programming, parallel programming, big data, etc.
  • experience in processing optical (hyperspectral and multispectral) remote sensing image data
  • very good knowledge of written and spoken English
  • willingness to integrate into a team
  • ability to self-employed training to new technologies and domains

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (m/f/non-binary). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
