The DFG-funded International Research Training Group ArcTrain, a collaborative project between the University of Bremen, the Alfred Wegener Institute, and a consortium of eight Canadian universities, invites applications for a PhD position in the area of Marine Geology/Organic Geochemistry/Paleoceanography in the framework of ArcTrain project HB-03 “

Impact of sea ice cover and meltwater discharge on the organic carbon flux and the environment in the late Quaternary circum-Greenland marginal seas
“.
The modern and past organic carbon flux into the marine realm around Greenland is/was strongly controlled by the sea ice distribution, primary production, and meltwater and suspended matter discharge from the Greenland Ice Sheet/continent. Factors such sea ice and ice sheet extent and their temporal variability are critical components in the global climate system, contributing to changes in Earth’s albedo, biological processes (primary production), and deep-water formation, a driving mechanism of the global thermohaline circulation. In order to understand the processes controlling the natural variability of sea ice cover and ice sheets and to quantify related changes in composition and flux of organic carbon in the polar regions, it is essential to study sedimentary sections going back in time beyond the period of direct measurements and observations.

You will work at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) Bremerhaven as part of the AWI Arctic Marine Geology Group of Prof. Dr. Ruediger Stein who also will be the supervisor of this PhD, and Dr. Kirsten Fahl who will be the advisor for the laboratory work and analytics. A research stay of several months is envisaged at the Université du Québec à Montréal within the working group of Prof. Dr. Anne de Vernal.

Tasks

You will use organic-geochemical bulk parameters and specific biomarkers to investigate environmental changes and their influence on the organic carbon flux in the circum-Greenland marginal seas through late Quaternary times. In this context, the reconstruction of variability in sea ice cover, meltwater discharge, primary productivity, and terrigenous sediment input are of special interest. By combining records from the Baffin Bay, Labrador Sea and Greenland Sea, a comprehensive synthesis of organic carbon flux and burial, and its controlling processes through LGM-Deglacial-Holocene times will be possible.

Requirements

  • Master´s degree (Diploma or equivalent) in geology, organic geochemistry or chemistry
  • Very good English language skills;
  • Enjoy working in an international interdisciplinary team

Additional skills

  • Own experience in using analytical techniques (GC, GC/MS, etc.) and/or basic knowledge in Quaternary climate history and paleoceanography will be advantageous.
