Senior Scientist

The Climate Dynamics section at AWI is offering a tenure track position for a senior scientist in support of its high-resolution climate modelling activities.

Tasks

  • You are expected to contribute to the development of FESOM and the coupled climate model IFS-FESOM (e.g., grid generation, model tuning and technical work on scalability).
  • You will also carry out and analyse high-resolution simulations at the km-scale on (pre-)exascale HPC systems to understand the sea ice-ocean along with its changes in a warming world.
  • You will lead activities in the section on scalable workflows, including data storage (PByte scale), model diagnostics and visualisation, using modern software approaches (e.g., zarr). In this context, taking responsibility for the development of pyfesom is expected.
  • You are also expected to contribute to supervising staff and successfully apply for and lead third-party funded projects.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in physics, meteorology, or oceanography, or a related field
  • Excellent knowledge of the physics of the ocean and sea ice
  • Experience in sea ice ocean model development (e.g., scalability and tuning)
  • Extensive experience in running and analyzing high-resolution model simulations at the km scale in massively parallel configurations
  • Extensive experience working with supercomputers (Tier 1 and 2)
  • Experience in the development of diagnostic software packages
  • Hands-on experience working with modern software packages and approaches (e.g., Python, Jupyter notebooks, zarr)
  • Experience in developing scalable workflows
  • Proven experience in training junior staff
  • Experience in visualization of high-resolution model simulations
  • Proven experience in publishing research results in the peer-reviewed literature
  • Experience in attracting external funding
  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken

Desirable knowledge/skills

  • Proven experience in training junior staff
  • Knowledge of German language
